Indu$trialized Food$

http://www.endlesssimmer.com/2010/10/12/industrial-food-complex/

This website, posted by Forkitude, talks about how, "Sysco requires their produces to carry at least $4 million in insurance so that sysco doesnt have to worry momentarily if there is an E. Coli outbreak in the spinach they are distributing because they will be able to refund their customers with the insurance proceeds" (website). These companies put so much money into their insurance policies that they do not have to worry about getting the consumer sick because they will be able to pay them off with their millions of dollars. The author states with which i agree that its all about money$$$$$. These companies only care about getting their food into the consumers hand and getting the consumers money in theirs. People need to be "concerned about their meat and where it is coming from" (website). Most people do not research the quality of grocery stores meat let alone where the companies are getting it from. Our nation has mass amounts of meat and its pretty darn good, but we need to be careful about where we buy it from.

Margarita Tartakovsky writes about how most people are worried about what they are eating. She gives an example of a lady in a coffee shop asking the worker how many calories are in a danish. The worker responds by saying, "400"(website). There was a day when everybody ate for taste and enjoyed what they were eating without worrying about how many calories were in their food. She talks about how europeans dont watch the calories they eat and how they are still thinner and "healthier" than Americans are today. Tatakovsky writes about how she wishes for a perfect food world where no one cared about the amount of calories and enjoyed what they were eating.

Food

http://www.nytimes.com/books/first/s/schlosser-fast.html

This website talks about the fast food nation that we are living in today. The author talks about how buying fast food is so routine and how we dont even think about it anymore. We walk in, stand in line, read the colored lit up menu, order, hand over some cash, and watch teenagers push some buttons and out comes a tray with colored paper wrapping our food. The fast food industry has grown so rapidly mainly because the basic hourly wage has slowly and steadily declined for the last 20 or so years. Minimum wage just is not enough to support a family let alone one individual, so these people are forced to buy fast, cheap, food that is not the slightest bit healthy.

MLK

I believe that MLK was writing to the general public. Even though he had an implicit audience of those who have power and an influence over people for a "better good", he was writing for a variety of audiences. He was writing to these in little power too, so that they would do something...anything. Sitting back and not doing anything is worse than doing something and being denied access or rights.  Being denied leaves room for improvement and the clergy were bound to listen to this letter and its proclaimed  determined statements.

Final Thoughts

My opinion about technology has not changed. Recent technology has made our lives easier as to quicker accession of information. Computers and applications on phones have created apps that allow you to order food, get directions, reviews, etc at the touch of a finger. You must be carful of what you read on websites and must make sure to check sources to make sure that they are credible. I am very interested as to what the new years will bring in accordance to new technology.

Want to get out there

Information on the internet is not always correct..wikipedia. People use wikipedia and believe that the information is correct when anyone can edit information on each page. Granted, some of the information is correct, but a majority of the information posted on the website is not up to date or inaccurate.

This is a clip from the office tv series. Michael is describing his love for wikipedia and explains why it is so awesome.. This is definitely sarcasm as wikipedia is an unreliable source.

Internet

I think these internet sites like google, wikipedia, etc, are making students lazier and less likely to read a book. Rather, students go on spark notes and e-books to get summaries of books instead of actually reading the book and getting their own understanding. I think it is important to read and write to express your own opinion instead of reading someone else's opinion and basing your thesis or ideas off of theirs. These sites have put in depth summaries of articles and books online that make students and other people feel it is unnecessary to even buy the book anymore.

journalism vs blogging

I believe that journalism and blogging are very much alike both exercising the importance of free speech. There really are no limits to either one of the writing techniques. Both express different views such as personal, political, or scientific. Neither writing techniques restrict the author to one topic or idea which allows the author to write as much as they want but, with that freedom obviously comes criticism. Not everyone who reads the authors article is going to enjoy their stand or opinion on a certain topic so the author must be open to criticism. Like they always say, "If you can dish it, you can take it".

Technology

New technological advances such as facebook, google, twitter, smartphones, etc, are moving society in a positive direction. Such applications and programs make communication between one another easily accessible at the touch of a finger. Without these applications and programs society would still be using mail (which some still do) which is slower than using the internet and having your message appear in minutes, even seconds.
Although technological advances are a positive thing in that they are very easy to use and easy to manage, some advances have negative characteristics because they decrease job opportunities. New technology can do things way faster and more efficiently than a human can do decreasing the amount of jobs on the market.
Although there are positive and negative effects of technology, I believe that technology is mostly moving our society in a positive direction creating social networking and search engines that people use everyday in order to do research and stay connected with family and friends.

Open Letter

Legislature—Jerry Brown

Proposing to cut 1 billion from state universities and 400 million from community colleges is outrageous. This big of a cut is going to diminish the already small selection of classes from Foothill College and other schools.  Most classes are already filled, restricting some students from being enrolled in classes that are required for graduation and transferring to other universities.  Inflation has already raised the cost of items such as library books and other textbooks necessary to excel in class.
I feel that the government is able to make other cuts that do not involve the education system. It is already hard enough to get a seat in a class let a lone all the credits needed for graduation.  These cuts will result in foothill letting their staff go, raising tuition and possibly reducing enrollment because of the higher tuition costs.
Many students are already on the brinks of not being able to afford the current tuition, textbooks, and other materials needed such as transportation and living conditions. A raise in tuition, cuts to student services, and larger class sizes are frightful thoughts for a majority of people. Some students need the after school facilities and services as well as smaller class sizes for the teacher student relationship and attention. As a voter I, as well as many other students, would like the cuts to come from somewhere else besides education system, perhaps the military..

Sincerely,
       Ca$h mOney

Education

I believe that people who enroll themselves at any academic level have the right and opportunity to a quality education taught by qualified teachers. Taking the initiative to enroll yourself in any class allows for the individual and for that matter society to grow, learn, and challenge the mind. As stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights under article 26, "Everyone has the right to education" which then states that education shall be free, "at least in the elementary and fundamental stages". It then goes on to mention that, "education shall be compulsory" or in easier terms, that it shall be required by law to attend elementary level schooling. I agree with this article in that education "promotes understanding, tolerance, and friendship among all nations and in society "among all racial or religious groups".

me

My name is steven and I am currently a student at Foothill College. My current major at Foothill is Business Finance, but as soon as I transfer I am going to double major in accounting and finance. I intend on receiving and going to school for a masters in business. In English 110 I would like to expand my vocabulary and be able to write much quicker and thoroughly than I do now.
